ja, so sollte melodic death metal aussehen. at the gates haben's einfach drauf melodik und aggression zu verbinden und dabei nicht in den einheitsbrei abzurutschen. könnte vielleicht dadran liegen, dass dieses album den stil sehr mitgeprägt hat.

ein gitarrist und ein drummer mit wechselndem gast pro album, ziemlich jamlastig.

matthew shipp - equilibrium
'n jazzpianist mit experimentierlust richtung elektro- und turntablemusik. recht leicht zugänglich auf dem album hier, trotzdem anspruchsvoll und vor allem trippig.

iam - l'école du micro d'argent
rapklassiker aus marseille - ich find' die pariser sachen zwar im großen und ganzen interessanter, aber das ist halt so'n must-have-ding, und für 7,28 euro kann man da gut mal zugreifen.

dreimal mafia k'1 fry:

113 - 113 degrés
2005er 113-album, fällt zunächst mal durch 'ne menge tanzbare tracks auf, mag dadurch vielleicht auch nicht so hiphop sein wie die frühen alben, bei 21 tracks in knapp 80 minuten steckt da aber definitiv noch viel mehr drin. den featuretrack mit mobb deep hätte man sich allerdings sparen können.

kery james - si c'était à refaire
politisch-sozial-religiös engagierter rap auf durchgehend ruhigen beats mit viel backgroundgesang, teils soulig, teils lateinamerikanisch und nordwestafrikanisch inspiriert, jedenfalls sehr hörenswert.

deutlich dunkler, härter und über weite strecken elektronischer als das vorgängeralbum. erinnert hier und da sogar 'n stückchen an die kollegen von 113. leicht seltsam wird's dann gegen ende mit 'ner schnelleren version von "sweet dreams" mit neuem französischem text, aber warum eigentlich nicht?

ska(-punk) der mit hardcore und elektro im stile der monkey-island sountracks vermengt wurde.
das ganze pendelt zwischen relativ normalen ska und einem seltsamen lärmenden etwas das wirkt als hätten die frühen hardcore bands ska statt punk vergewalltigt, sehr sehr geil.

beans - only feat. william parker & hamid drake

und wieder jazzrap der anderen art: beans hat beats gebaut, die dann von den herren parker und drake mit baß und schlagzeug eingespielt wurden, bevor beans mit dem ergebnis nochmal 'rumgefickt und hier und da seinen gottgleichen flow drübergelegt hat. der sound ist dann am ende größtenteils atmosphärisch bis trippig und beweist mal wieder, daß wir's hier mit 'nem verdammt vielseitigen künstler zu tun haben.

"this whole process has been one of introspection and reflection" steht im digipack, und so klingt das ding auch. weg vom beatminimalismus und den abstrakten wortspielen der apc-alben. musikalisch fällt das hier teils meditativ, teils verspielt, teils bedrohlich aus; die nach wie vor ziemlich unerreichbare sprachakrobatik treibt sich besonders gerne im irak und in new orleans sowie bei "dead black leaders turned over in their graves" herum und bei der gelegenheit wird dann auch mal haile selassie gesamplet. quasi das politische gegengewicht zu beans' (natürlich großartigen) "ich rede 45 minuten lang von frauen und meinem penis"-solo-alben. haben muß man's aber schon für den schätzungsweise besten auf 'nem jazz-sample basierenden track ever.

jeweils einen track anhören kann man hier und hier, 'nen echten eindruck vom album hat man danach aber eigentlich auch nicht.
